RI Life

In my experience, people who haven’t had much experience with Rhode Island tend to make fun of it. And who can blame them? All anyone has heard about it in popular media is that we reelected a mayor who served prison time for beating a man with a fireplace log, our systemic corruption, Brown being a joke ivy (see its references in The Simpsons and Family Guy), and it being a mafia hotbed.

And any RIer will hardly be the last person to claim it’s perfect, but it’s undoubtedly special. I had a typical outsider view when I first came to RI but it definitely found a place in my heart. RI packs a lot of punch for such a small place.┬áProvidence isn’t a world famous city like Boston (whom it thinks it’s often competing with), but it’s still really cool. RI’s beaches aren’t picture perfect California beaches, but they’re quiet and you can get to them from downtown Providence in a 45 minute scenic bike ride.

I’m not sure if I’ve had a typical experience here, being both a grad student and someone with a group of friends who does things that most people don’t, but either way, it’s all been a blast in this state and I’ll miss it for sure when I leave.

Here are some photos of my time in RI.
